ICE CHALLENGE

One Stephensville volunteer firefighter plunged into a pool of ice water Wednesday night at the Stephensville Volunteer Fire Department as part of an event that raised $264 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, Morgan City firefighter and Stephensville volunteer firefighter Jody Acosta said.
Stephensville volunteer firefighter Jay Hutchins was the lone firefighter to plunge into the ice water Wednesday, Acosta said.
Congress created the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation in 1992 to help the families of firefighters who died in the line of duty by picking up funeral costs, sending their children to school or assisting families financially in other ways, he said.
The challenge is held across the country, but came to the area when a Houma firefighter challenged one of the Morgan City firefighters, Acosta said. The Morgan City firefighters then challenged a couple of firefighters within the Morgan City Fire Department.
“When he challenged me, I wanted to spread it out so I challenged two people in Stephensville, two people from Patterson and two people from Franklin,” Acosta said.
And then the Stephensville firefighters challenged all the firefighters within the Stephensville Volunteer Fire Department, he said.
If a firefighter accepts the challenge and gets into the ice water, the firefighter is only required to donate $10, Acosta said. However, if the firefighter does not accept the challenge, he or she has to donate $100, he said.
