King cake competitor

JJ’s Café and Donuts baker Chuck Sheehan and owner JJ Starbuck were busy this morning with customers picking up their orders for king cakes. Sheehan has an even heavier workload for the weekend, filling around 100 king cake orders for the restaurant and preparing 600 king cakes starting Friday for the King Cake Festival in New Orleans. The festival will be held Sunday in Champion Square at the Mercedes Benz Superdome and showcases 23 bakers. JJ’s Café and Donuts is the only competitor from St. Mary Parish. Sheehan will prepare 80 cakes for sampling and two that will be entered into competition. He will also have cakes for sale. Sheehan said he’s nervous going against such big-name competitors but that it was an honor to even have the opportunity to compete.
