Naming the robots

Residents of St. Mary Parish ages 6-16 were asked to help name two remotely operated robots. Funded through the Port Security Grant Program, these newest technological members of the Sheriff’s Office are used to explore places too dangerous for police and also serve as ambassadors that help teach children about safety. Madelyn Compton and Bryson Landry chose the names introducing the robots at schools, churches and visits to the communities of St. Mary Parish. Compton chose the name Armstrong for the larger robot because of its arm. Landry named the smaller robot Joshua. He says he chose that name because of the warrior Joshua in the bible. He says, “The robots are acting as warriors so the name is fitting.” The winners were presented with $100 Walmart gift cards sponsored by Gator Rigging.
