No damages or injuries at Berwick landfill fire

A fire at the Harold J. “Babe” Landry Landfill in Berwick Sunday created a lot of work for firefighters, but caused no injuries or damage.
Berwick Fire Chief Allen Rink said his department received a report of a fire at the landfill at 3:30 p.m. It originally was reported to be a building on fire at the landfill but turned out to be the “whole mountain of trash,” Rink said.
The fire was contained but continued to smolder for four more hours as firefighters continued to spray down the trash that was turned over by heavy equipment, the chief said.
The danger in a large fire at the landfill is two-fold: smoke can drift over nearby U.S. 90 reducing visibility and there are pipelines that run behind the landfill, Rink said, adding that neither became a problem Sunday.
Six fire trucks from Berwick and two from Bayou Vista responded to the blaze with a total of 25 personnel.
No injuries or damage were reported.
