Parish amendment vote a mixed bag

St. Mary Parish voters turned down raises for members of the parish council but gave them another term in office.
Salary increases for council members was defeated with 60 percent against and 39 percent in favor.
However, 52 percent of voters were in favor of a third term versus 47 percent against. The council currently is restricted to two terms.
While a proposal granting a raise to the parish president failed 54 percent against to 45 percent in favor, the charter amendment intended to grant the parish president a third term in office ended in a tie vote with 7,010 ballots cast on both sides of the issue.
Registrar of Voters Jolene Holcombe said this morning that she is unsure what the outcome of that tie vote will be and is researching the subject.
