Patricia remnants dump beaucoup rain on St. Mary

Franklin weathered the remnants of Hurricane Patricia, though tensions were high as some six or more inches of rain fell on the city.
Mayor Raymond Harris Jr. said this morning that officials were concerned with the various waterways such as Bayou Teche, the Yokely Canal, Franklin Canal and others. There were some waterways that came out of their banks.
“We just kept our eyes on the waterways,” Harris said.
The city did send out a OneCall alert asking residents to stay off the roads for several hours Sunday. Harris said that request was issued to prevent vehicles traveling through high water from pushing their wakes into homes.
“Also sometimes the cars stall and we have to go help get them off the road,” he said.
With such volume of rainfall in a short period of time, Harris said the pumps worked as expected. “Within 45 minutes after the rain stopped, the water was cleared,” he said.
The Franklin Canal flood gate had been closed before the rains began.
Areas south of US 90 experienced incidents of severe rainfall and tidal surge.
