Pre-schoolers learn about saving
“Pennies for Pre-Schoolers Program” has given Head Start Students and their families an opportunity to begin saving money in a real bank account.
Fourteen graduating students from Peter Pan Head Start and and nine students from Mickey Mouse Head Start have opened $25 checking accounts.
Iberiabank, Patterson State Bank and MC Bank have agreed to match funds to the program participants.
Connie Harris, branch manager at Iberiabank, was instrumental in explaining to the students the different ways money can be collected and saved, how checking accounts work and the benefit of opening accounts at such an early age.
“The highlight of Bank Day is always seeing the bright eyed students get off the bus with pennies in hand, ready to open their accounts and learn about money!” said project manager Delores Stewart. “We love to introduce financial literacy to these students and see the excitement it gives them to be exposed to banks and money managers where dollars make sense.”
St. Mary Community Action Executive Director and Head Start Administrator Almetra Franklin said, “These babies grow up so fast and before you know it, and our children will be graduates from Head Start, high school and college.”
She also stressed the importance of a balanced education even from an early pre-kindergarten level. For the past five years, the Pennies for Pre-Schoolers Program has been preparing Head Start students and their families for the future by providing an opportunity to begin saving money for the real world.
