Protecting the coast

The St. Mary Parish Soil and Water Conservation District implemented its annual coastal marsh grass planting Oct. 15-16. SWCD partnered with local agencies and this year’s project was conducted with the help of the Bayou Teche National Wildlife Refuge, the City of Franklin Fire Department, Franklin High School 4-H, the Friends of Bayou Teche Refuge (Donovan Garcia), Hanson Memorial High School 4-H, the Louisiana Agriculture And Forestry Department, Louisiana State Parks, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, the LSU Extension Services, NRCS, Sea Grant/LSU Fisheries, St. Mary Parish Junior Leaders, St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Water Patrol, the United States Coast Guard and the USDA Farm Service Agency. Some 3,000 California Bulrush plants were planted along the coastline in the Burns Point area.
