River advisory issued

Staff Report

Mariners are advised to use caution when traveling through the Atchafalaya River Wednesday due to increased water flow into the river upstream, Coast Guard Lt. Jon Scott, director of vessel traffic service for the Morgan City Marine Safety Unit, said.
On Wednesday, the stage and velocity of the Atchafalaya River may be significantly affected in the vicinity of and downstream from Simmesport, due to water diversion upstream, Scott said. These control measures may affect the Morgan City Captain of the Port zone and Vessel Traffic Service Berwick Bay’s regulated navigation area, Scott said.
Between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Wednesday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will significantly increase the diversion of water through the Old River Control Structures to move sediment from the Auxiliary Inflow Channel to the Outflow Channel, according to a Corps of Engineers news release.
The effects of the increased flow will occur between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, the release stated.
