Sheriff’s agents arrest 2 on narcotics charges after chase

St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Narcotics Division agents made two arrests Tuesday that netted drugs and other paraphernalia.
Sheriff Mark Hebert said Derrick Kelley, 19, of 7810 La. 182, Franklin, was arrested at 8:34 p.m. on charges of improper lane use, aggravated flight from an officer and possession of marijuana.
Jamarcus Gunner, 20, of 172 Verdun Lane, Verdunville, was arrested at the same time on charges of possession of synthetic marijuana with intent to distribute, obstruction of justice, resisting an officer and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Detectives with the Narcotics Division patrolling the Patterson area observed a car cross over the center line of U.S. 90, nearly striking another vehicle.
The driver of the car failed to stop and fled from detectives, reportedly travelling at a high rate of speed and running other vehicles off the roadway. Detectives pursued the car onto Kelly Pellerin Lane in Verdunville where the driver of the car reportedly passed close to pedestrians standing in the roadway.
As the driver of the car stopped the vehicle on Kelly Pellerin Lane, a passenger, later identified as Gunner, exited the car. Upon seeing detectives nearby, Gunner threw several bags of synthetic marijuana into the back seat of the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
Detectives detained Gunner, the driver, identified as Kelly, and another occupant in the vehicle pending further investigation.
They reportedly received consent to search the car and located bags of synthetic marijuana with an estimated street value of approximately $2,000 dollars, a small bag of marijuana, a digital scale, and small plastic bags inside the car.
Gunner and Kelly were transported to the parish jail for booking. No bail is set. The other occupant in the car was released with no charges.
