Sheriff: Burglary ring busted

By ZACHARY FITZGERALD zfitzgerald@daily-review.com

Eight people have been charged in connection with a string of residential and vehicle burglaries in St. Mary and Assumption parishes, according to law enforcement officials.
On Aug. 12, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation into multiple residential burglaries in Bayou Vista. The investigation ultimately led to a joint investigative effort with Berwick police and uncovered information regarding other burglaries under investigation in Assumption Parish, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Hebert said in a news release.
The investigation into the Bayou Vista burglaries culminated in the arrest of eight suspects and the recovery of $2,100 in stolen property. These arrests resolve the four burglaries in Bayou Vista on Teche Road, David Road, Canal Road and Sunset Avenue, Hebert said.
Those arrested included the following:
—Kaleb Gros, 17, of the 100 block of Sun Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 11:20 p.m. Wednesday for three counts of simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling.
—A juvenile male, 16, of Patterson, was arrested at 2:38 a.m. today for simple burglary.
—Callen Slay Richard, 17, of the 1900 block of Saturn Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 5:19 a.m. today for simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling.
—Ryan Boudreaux, 19, of the 200 block of Southeast Boulevard in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 3:44 a.m. today for simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling.
—Layne Arnaud, 18, of the 300 block of Neptune Street in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 4:20 a.m. today for simple burglary of an inhabited dwelling.
Detectives identified Richard, Boudreaux, Arnaud, the juvenile male, and Gros as suspects in the burglary that occurred on Sunset Avenue in Bayou Vista. Gros was also identified as the suspect who burglarized two residences on Teche and David roads, Hebert said.
Detectives spoke with the suspects who each admitted to their involvement in the crimes, Hebert said. Arnaud and Boudreaux were jailed with no bail set. Gros and Richard were transported to the Berwick Police Department pending additional charges in ongoing burglary investigations in Berwick. Further information on those cases is being released by Berwick police. The juvenile was released to a guardian pending juvenile court proceedings.
Berwick Police Chief James Richard said Gros and Callen Richard are charged on warrants from an early Friday morning incident where Gros and Callen Richard are accused of breaking into a vehicle in the Country Club Estates area in Berwick. In that burglary, the two are accused of taking a cell phone, purse, a wallet and cash from the vehicle, the chief said.
Berwick police expect to charge both Gros and Callen Richard in four other vehicle and residential burglaries, the chief said. Those additional charges should conclude the investigation into the burglaries in Berwick, he said.
In all the burglaries in Berwick, Gros and Callen Richard got into the vehicles and residences through unlocked doors, the chief said.
Sheriff’s detectives arrested two more suspects in connection with a burglary at an apartment on Canal Road in Bayou Vista.
—Brittany Morgan, 23, of the 500 block of Joey Street in Patterson, was arrested at 8:11 p.m. Wednesday on a warrant for unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling.
—Kaleb Calloway, 17, of the 100 block of Sun Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 12:22 a.m. today on a warrant for unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, possession of synthetic marijuana with intent to distribute, transactions involving drug proceeds and resisting an officer.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office narcotics detectives working with Berwick police located Calloway on the warrant at a residence on Burchfield Lane in Berwick. Calloway attempted to pull away from detectives, the sheriff said. Also during the arrest, detectives located a bag of synthetic marijuana and $184 in cash in the pocket of his shorts, Hebert said.
The warrants stem from an investigation that began Tuesday when the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of a burglary at an apartment on Canal Road in Bayou Vista that occurred about two weeks ago, Hebert said. Detectives identified Morgan and Calloway as suspects. While speaking with detectives, both suspects admitted to their involvement in the crime, the sheriff said. Morgan and Calloway were jailed with no bail set.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office detectives identified a third suspect in the burglary on Canal Road and arrested him after 8 a.m. today.
—Damarcus McNeal, 17, of the 300 block of Cardinal Street in Morgan City, was arrested for unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling. Shortly after 8 a.m. today, patrol deputies responding to a report of a suspicious person on Myrtle Street in Bayou Vista apprehended McNeal on the warrant, Hebert said.
In the news release, Hebert thanked the Bayou Vista community for their diligence in reporting suspicious activity in their neighborhoods, which contributed to solving the crimes, he said.
