Smith, Sigur win in Saturday election runoffs

Harry “Boo Boo” Smith Jr. will be the new Baldwin police chief and Curtis Sigur will take a seat on the 16th Judicial District Court after runoff wins in Saturday’s election.
And a half-cent law enforcement sales tax sought by the St. Mary Parish Sheriff failed with 7,275 votes against and 4,822 votes in favor.
Smith garnered 70 percent of the vote over Albert “Al” Thibodaux in the police chief’s race. The totals were 643 to 274 votes.
Sigur with 2,321 votes captured almost 84 percent of the vote over Lucretia Pecante with 452 votes. In justice of the peace runoffs, David W. Hill edged by Lee Condolle with 1,095 votes to 1,019 in Ward 5; Nekesia J. Bowie defeated Virginia Sutton with 273 votes to 172 in Ward 7; and Cardell Bowser Ina won over Monica Morrison Gibson with 651 votes to 387 in Ward 10.
The newly elected officials take office on Jan. 1.
