Summertime fun for Scouts, who get to show off their skills

Forty-two Cub Scouts from across the area got to show off their archery, slingshot and BB gun skills, learn self-defense techniques and participate in water activities last week.
Boy Scouts helped host a Cub Scout camp last week at the Patterson Area Civic Center.
Troop 41 of Patterson and Troop 49 of Morgan City staffed the camp.
Campers heard a different guest speaker each day of the camp, Troop 41 Assistant Scoutmaster Phillip Begley said.
Representatives from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office spoke at the camp.
Local jujitsu clubs provided a self-defense demonstration, Begley said.
The Civil Air Patrol commander spoke to the group Tuesday and, on Thursday, the Cub Scouts participated in a Zumba class, Begley said.
Monday through Thursday, campers got to try their hand at the archery and BB gun ranges, Begley said.
On Friday, the Scouts set up a slingshot range.
Also on Friday, the Bayou Vista Volunteer Fire Department brought a firetruck to spray the kids, he said. Friday gave the Cub Scouts the chance to get “soaking wet,” Begley said.
The Boy Scouts set up two obstacle courses, one for the Tiger Cubs and the other one for older Cub Scouts, he said.
A “dunk booth” was also part of Friday’s water activities.
