Telephone scam alert issued to local seniors

Seniors are being warned of a phone scam involving Medicare and other forms of health care and health insurance.
The National Council on Aging reports that scammers are tricking seniors into signing up for fake services and giving personal information to strangers.
Medicare and Social Security agencies do not call a senior’s home, and neither does the Department of Health and Hospitals in Louisiana.
A rash of these scams began in the first week of January across the United States from a number identified as 263-891-1010. These phone calls originate in Africa.
Louisiana DHH is not calling seniors regarding any sort of refund and will not call to ask for bank account information. They also do not request Medicare or Medicade numbers.
