Toys for Tots poker run registration still open

The Marine Corps League, St. Mary Detachment kicks off its annual Toys for Tots fundraising drive Oct. 11 with a poker run.
Riders can register now through 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Co-coordinator James Dugas said the Toys for Tots program provides Christmas presents for an average of 1,400 children annually in St. Mary and surrounding areas.
“We’ll reach out as far as we can to help,” Dugas said.
The Toys for Tots poker run costs $20 to pre-register plus $15 per passenger. All those who pre-register receive a free café au lait and beignet breakfast, free barbecue lunch by B&G Smokehouse and a T-shirt.
Riders are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate at the event.
The poker run starts at 9 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m. at Daiquiri & Company. The 114-mile run stops at Cajun Country Lounge in Houma, Congo Lounge in Thibodaux and the Spunky Monkey in Pierre Part.
Prize money will be awarded for first through third places and worst hand. Winners must be over age 18.
After the poker run, a band will entertain while riders and the public eat barbecue. Those not riding can get a plate for $8 beginning at 11 a.m. Oct. 11. The menu will be barbecued chicken, pulled pork, sausage, rice dressing, baked beans and coleslaw. Call 985-384-3446 for tickets.
Additionally, Dugas said there will be giveaways, door prizes, and a motorcycle show featuring 13 divisions.
Applications for Christmas gifts are being accepted at St. Mary Outreach, 608 First St., Morgan City, from qualifying custodial parents of children 12 years and younger to receive toys for Christmas. Applicants must have picture identification, Social Security card, birth certificates for the qualifying children, proof of income for the current month and all current monthly bills.
Dugas said applications are screened by St. Mary Outreach “to make sure it’s going to the needy”.
St. Mary Outreach is open 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to noon Fridays.
