Truck knocks down power line; causes outage Thursday

A truck that knocked down a power line by G&J Marine knocked out power in a section of the city for slightly more than an hour, City Utilities Director Bill Cefalu said.
At about 10:45 a.m. Thursday, a truck at G&J Marine caught a low hanging cable, Cefalu said. The cable was lower than normal because a truck delivering to Shannon Hardware caught the same line earlier in the morning and caused the line to sag from Railroad Avenue to Freret Street, Cefalu said.
When the G&J truck exited its location, it pulled a pole over and the 13,000-volt line came in contact with the truck, causing the breaker to trip, affecting everyone from Front Street to Brashear Avenue to Myrtle Street to Railroad Avenue, Cefalu said.
Two sections of primary line burnt to the ground, but no one was injured, Cefalu said. Everything was put together and had the circuit back on at 12:02 p.m. Thursday, Cefalu said.
