St. Mary Parish public schools will be closed Friday due to the potential for icy roads and frozen bridges.
St. Mary Parish Superintendent of Schools Donald Aguillard made the decision this afternoon after consulting with the National Weather Service in Lake Charles and Homeland Security Director Duval Arthur.
Assistant Superintendent Keith Thibodeaux said the weather service told them there is a 30 to 40 percent chance of freezing precipitation.
“That’s too high of a number for us not to play it on the safe side,” Thibodeaux said.
While school may be closed, Parish Athletic Director Lenny Armato said all St. Mary athletic events Friday will go on as planned because conditions are expected to clear up after lunch.
Upper and Lower St. Martin Parish schools also will be closed, according to St. Martin Parish Superintendent Lottie Beebe.
Central Catholic High and Holy Cross Elementary schools in Morgan City also will be closed.
Young Memorial Campus of South Central Louisiana Technical College will close Friday, according to Regional Director Earl Meador.
Morgan City governmental offices will be open Friday, according to Mayor Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi. If the bridges ice over and employees cannot get to work, absences will be excused, he said.
The Town of Berwick’s governmental offices will be open as well, Mayor Louis Ratcliff said.
Patterson governmental offices will be open Friday, Public Works Director Steve Bierhorst said.
Parish government will be open Friday, according to Chief Administrative Officer Bo LaGrange.
St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s civil offices will be open as well, Sheriff Mark Hebert said. Deputies will be working closely with the Department of Transportation officials to monitor road conditions.
