Water leaks linked to cold weather

The area saw a few issues with water lines breaking due to the freezing conditions and area plumbers said they may see a few more calls as the weather warms up.
A water line broke due to the cold weather Wednesday on California Street in Berwick, and workers repaired the leak around 1 p.m. Wednesday, Berwick Mayor Louis Ratcliff said. Berwick did not have any other water line issues, Ratcliff said.
Linda Cole, office manager at Alfred’s Plumbing in Morgan City, said she had not received any calls this morning about broken pipes in the area Wednesday or today.
Cole said the plumbing service might get some calls about busted pipes Thursday after the temperature warms up and ice melts exposing any cracks in water lines or pipes.
Morgan City Mayor Frank “Boo” Grizzaffi said the city had water lines break Wednesday on Federal Avenue at Spinella Park and behind the Morgan City Municipal Auditorium, and they were repaired during the day.
The water line leak at Spinella Park was a break in the “backflow preventer,” Grizzaffi said. City crews were also waiting to repair a minor sewer line break on Federal Avenue at Greenwood Street until the weather warmed up today, Grizzaffi said. All of the breaks were due to the cold weather, he said.
As of about 10 a.m. today, Morgan City workers were repairing a minor stress crack in water line on Front Street, but the crack did not require the city to shut off any water lines, Morgan City Water, Sewer and Gas Supervisor Kawika Kaai said.
Patterson Mayor Rodney Grogan said, as of about 8:30 a.m. today, the city did not have any water line issues reported.
