Wrecks claim 3 lives

Three people died in automobile wrecks this weekend in Assumption Parish.
In Pierre Part, two brothers died when the Corvette they were in left La. 70 and struck several trees, according to a news release from Louisiana State Police Troop C.
The brothers were unrestrained in the crash that occurred at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, police said.
The 2008 Chevrolet Corvette was traveling west on La. 70 at a high rate of speed around box number 4030 in Pierre Part where it entered a right hand curve on La. 70 and lost control. As the Corvette navigated the curve, it crossed the center line and began to rotate counter-clockwise as it traveled off the left side of the highway, police said.
The Corvette struck several trees causing the two unrestrained occupants to be ejected from the vehicle.
Police identified the occupants as Todd Ponville, 48, of Pierre Part, and Troy Ponville, 49, of Napoleonville, who were pronounced dead on the scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office representative.
Officers said that due to the circumstances, it is unclear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash, police said. Routine toxicology tests are pending for both occupants of the Corvette.
Then, shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday, troopers began an investigation into a head-on crash that killed a 10-year-old girl and left three others injured on La. 1 in Assumption Parish, according to a news release from Louisiana State Police Troop C.
The investigation revealed that a 2014 Honda Civic was traveling south on La. 1 in Napoleonville at the same time a 2008 Nissan Altima was traveling north on La. 1 approaching the Civic.
The Civic was being driven by Sommer Pierson, 31, of Gray, and the Altima was being driven by Dale Robertson, 60, of Oscoda, Michigan.
Police said, for unknown reasons, the Civic crossed the center line of La. 1 and entered the northbound lane. The Altima, in an attempt to avoid the Civic, traveled onto the northbound shoulder of La. 1, but was struck head-on.
As a result of the crash, Neveah Pierson, 10, who was the daughter of Sommer Pierson and a passenger in the Civic, was pronounced dead on the scene by the Assumption Parish Coroner’s Office, according to police. They added that the girl was not properly restrained at the time of the crash.
The driver and second passenger of the Civic were transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge with moderate injuries. The driver of the Altima, who was properly restrained, was transported to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries, troopers said.
Impairment is not suspected to be a factor in the crash. Blood was taken from both drivers and the test results are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
