St. Amant man arrested in domestic abuse cases

A 44-year-old St. Amant man was arrested Thursday on warrants for domestic abuse that includes strangulation, St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert said in a news release.

—Carl J. Halvorson, 44, of the 44000 block of La. 429 in St. Amant , was arrested at 3:42 p.m. Thursday on the charges of failure to appear for obeying traffic control signals, operating a vehicle without a driver’s license, and operating a vehicle not covered by security.

Halvorson was also charged on two warrants for domestic abuse battery and domestic abuse battery (strangulation). A deputy transported Halvorson from the Ascension Parish jail to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center on the warrants.

The domestic abuse charges are the result of investigations into two separate batteries that occurred at a residence in the Patterson area.

Deputies responding to one of the reports found evidence that Halvorson placed his hands around a woman’s neck and choked her, causing the victim to lose consciousness. When the victim awoke, Halvorson continued to hit the victim.

In the investigation of the second crime, deputies found evidence that Halvorson repeatedly punched the same female victim. No bail is set.

Hebert reported responding to 38 complaints and reported the following arrests:

—Nicholas Laue, 27, of the 1500 block of Hickory Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 7:41 a.m. Thursday on the charge of failure to appear on the charges of driving under suspension and speeding.

A deputy conducting a booking of Laue at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center located the active warrant for Laue’s arrest. No bail is set.

—Christine N. Cantrell, 28, of the 1100 block of Fourth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 1:42 p.m. Thursday on a warrant for failure to comply with the terms and conditions of drug court.

A deputy transported Cantrell from the Livingston Parish Detention Center to the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center on the warrant. Bail is set at $100,000.

— Dzu Hoang, 38, of the 700 block of Magnolia Street in Amelia, was arrested at 9:09 p.m. Thursday on the charge of aggravated assault with a firearm.

Deputies responded to a report of an assault involving a gun on Cypress Street in Amelia.

During the course of the investigation, deputies gathered statements and other evidence indicating that Hoang was parked in the roadway when a verbal argument broke out between him and the driver of another vehicle, who was attempting to pass.

During the argument, Hoang retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and pointed it at two victims. Hoang was transported to the parish jail for booking. No bail is set.

— Kentrell Diggs, 23, of the 400 block of Lagonda Road in Bayou Vista, was arrested at 9:07 p.m. Thursday on a warrant for failure to appear on the charges of direct contempt, failure to use seatbelts, operating a vehicle without a license, and failure to honor written promise to appear.

While booking Diggs at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center, a correctional officer located the active warrant for his arrest. No bail is set.

Morgan City Police Chief James Blair reported the following arrest:

—Purcell A. Gros , 42, of Sixth Street in Morgan City, was arrested at 6:52 p.m. Thursday on a charge of disturbing the peace intoxicated.

Officers responded to a residence on Sixth Street in regard to a call to remove a subject. The officers arrived and spoke with the complainant who resides at the residence.

The complainant told officers that Gros was at the residence causing a disturbance, hollering at occupants inside. The officers were further told that Gros was intoxicated and had left the residence walking prior to the officers arriving.

A description was provided and officers located Gros in the area moments later. Reports indicate that when officers spoke with Gros , he was suspected to have been drinking and appeared to be intoxicated.

Gros was placed under arrest and transported to the Morgan City Jail where he was booked and incarcerated.

Berwick Police Chief James Richard reported the following arrests:

—Johnny Freeman Jr., 64, of the 200 block of St. Joseph Lane in Franklin, was arrested at 3:02 p.m. Thursday on the charge of driving under suspension. Freeman was released on bail set at $1,000.

—Heather Durapau, 38, of the 1300 block of First Street in Patterson, was arrested at 7:57 p.m. Thursday on a charge of theft by shoplifting. Durapau was released on bail set at $300.

Patterson Police Chief Patrick LaSalle reported no arrests.
