Child, 5, dies in La. 83 crash after running into roadway
A 5-year-old child died Thursday after a vehicle struck the child who ran out into the roadway on La. 83 in St. Mary Parish, according to a State Police Troop I news release.
Shortly before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian that occurred on La. 83 near Glencoe Road, the release said.
The crash took the life of a 5-year-old pedestrian.
The initial State Police investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 2001 Ford Taurus operated by James Hopkins III, 38, of Baldwin was traveling on La. 83 when a dog and a child ran out onto the roadway, the release said.
Hopkins was unable to avoid the crash and struck the dog and the child, police said.
The child suffered critical injuries and was transported to a hospital in a personally owned vehicle, police said.
While at the hospital, the child succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead, the release stated.
Hopkins was properly restrained and was not injured. Impairment on his part is not suspected, and he was not cited in the crash, the release said.
