Derrick Bodin, 51, was charged in a bill of information by 16th Judicial District Attorney Bo Duhe which was filed April 22, St. Mary Parish Clerk of Court records said.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy shot during the incident returned to work about a week ago, Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Traci Landry said. The deputy’s identity wasn’t released.
Authorities brought Gayneaux Trahan, 47, to a hospital after they found him suffering from a gunshot wound at a Dumesnil Road home Dec. 27 when Bodin allegedly began shooting at law enforcement. Trahan died Dec. 30 at Lafayette General Medical Center.
No one has been charged yet in Trahan’s death. St. Mary Parish Coroner Dr. F.H. Metz Jr. ruled Trahan’s death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. State police are still investigating the shooting.
Bodin was arrested Feb. 17 on the charges of attempted murder and aggravated criminal damage to property after an extensive state police investigation into an officer-involved shooting, a news release said. His arrest coincided with his release from the hospital.
State police detectives determined that Bodin fired at 18 separate law enforcement officers, who were targeted and fired upon during the incident. It also showed that Bodin had shot his neighbor’s vehicle multiple times.
According to Bodin’s booking sheet, sheriff’s deputies responded at 5:29 a.m. Dec. 27 to an incident in the 18800 block of Dumesnil Rd. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a shooting victim, who state police identified as Trahan. Moments later, Bodin began shooting at the deputies with his 12-gauge shotgun and a 7-mm rifle.
Louisiana State Police detectives were asked to investigate the officer-involved shooting. While deputies were tending to Trahan. Bodin began shooting at them from the home, state police said. The Vermillion Parish Sheriff’s Office and Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene.
As Bodin continued firing at law enforcement personnel, a St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s deputy was shot in both legs, police said.
Shortly after, Louisiana State Police-SWAT was able to enter the home and found Bodin suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his face. Bodin was trans-ported to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.
