A Morgan City home sustained major damage, but there were no serious injuries after a fire started early Wednesday morning in a utility room.
The Morgan City Fire Department received a call at 2:48 a.m. Wednesday reporting a utility room fire at a home in the 1000 block of Fig Street. Firefighters arrived on scene two minutes later, and heavy fire and smoke was showing, Assistant Fire Chief John Price said.
Upon arrival, the occupants of the house where the fire started had already exited safely, Price said. Firefighters had to force entry into an adjacent home the fire had spread to in order to assist the resident getting out, he said.
Resident Herb Stanley said he and his wife were sleeping when they awoke to the sound of the smoke alarm. Stanley was thankful the alarm worked properly, and the couple was able to escape the fire unharmed.
The residents were fortunate to get out of the home right away, as the flames quickly engulfed the house, Stanley said. Stanley plans to demolish, and then rebuild the home.
Fire spread to the attic of the home, and most of the home sustained fire and smoke damage, Price said.
Stanley expressed gratitude to firefighters for their response to the fire.
“The fire department was here quick,” Stanley said.
The fire appeared to have begun in the utility room area and investigators suspect the cause of the fire was electrical, Price said. Two vehicles and a boat were also damaged. One car was totaled, Price said.
The adjacent home had some damage to its siding due to the heat of the home next door, but firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading beyond the siding, Price said.
Twenty-two firefighters responded to the fire along with three pumper trucks and one aerial truck.
Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries at Teche Regional Medical Center and released.
Responders cleared the scene at 5:32 a.m. Wednesday.
