Flash flood watch through Monday evening
The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for St. Mary and surrounding parishes through Monday evening, and authorities urge people to stay off the roads, when possible, because of potential street flooding.
Showers and thunderstorms will continue in the area through at least Sunday afternoon. Any thunderstorm will produce high rainfall rates and be slow movers. Therefore, there will be a potential for flash flooding. The activity will develop again late Sunday night and early Monday with a round of widespread rainfall. With the saturated soils and already full rivers and bayous any rainfall runoff will create the potential for flooding, the National Weather Service forecast says.
Morgan City police are asking people to refrain from unnecessary travel with heavy rain approaching the area until the weather improves. Local street flooding is possible in areas. Do not drive in areas of high water or around barricades. It is unsafe not only for you but could endanger others, their homes and businesses, police say. Officers will patrol areas and deploy barricades to limit traffic as needed. Police say if you must travel, use caution, slow your speed and watch for officers and others. Anyone with questions or in need assistance, contact the Morgan City Police Department at 985-384-2310, 911 or your local department.
