Levee district to discuss cattle leases

Staff Report

The St. Mary Levee District’s Cattle Lease Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Parish Courthouse in Franklin to discuss a proposal to lease district property for cattle grazing, a news release said.
Property to be considered for lease includes the former Atchafalaya Basin Levee District levees from Calumet Cut to the Charenton Flood Gate near the Iberia Parish line. This area has been selected because the St. Mary Levee District owns most of this property, as opposed to other areas where the levee district only has a right-of-way, the release said.
The purpose of the meeting is to gauge interest in this proposal, discuss potential rules and regulations concerning this use, discuss the prospective terms of a lease and discuss the legal process to be followed in bidding for these leases.
Officials will also talk about the use of the levee top road as well as the haul road along the levee’s base. The committee hopes that prospective farmers will be able to provide recommendations and input into this proposal, the release said.
