Man killed while crossing U.S. 90

A 39-year-old Franklin man was killed Wednesday night on U.S. 90 near Patterson after a pickup truck struck him while he ran across the highway, according to a state police news release.
Shortly after 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to a crash on U.S. 90 westbound near Patterson.
The crash claimed the life of Samuel Mitchell, 39, of Franklin.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Mitchell was walking on the south shoulder of U.S. 90 east, when a family member arrived and attempted to talk Mitchell into the vehicle, the release said.
Mitchell ran away from his family member and began to cross the westbound lanes of U.S. 90, when he was struck by a 2007 Dodge pickup truck driven by Wallace Mason, 83, of Belle Chasse.
The St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Mitchell dead at the scene, the release said.
Mason was properly restrained at the time of the crash and was not injured.
The St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office took toxicology samples from Mitchell and submitted them for analysis, the release said. Mason voluntarily submitted to a chemical breath test and was not impaired.
The crash remains under investigation.
