Man pleads guilty in Morgan City drive-by shooting
A 24-year-old Morgan City man pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge last week stemming from a March drive-by shooting in which two others were also arrested.
James Joshua Naverre, 20, of Morgan City, pleaded guilty Sept. 29 to the charge of conspiracy to commit assault by drive-by shooting, according to St. Mary Parish Clerk of Court records. Judge Keith Comeaux ordered the remaining charge of aggravated criminal damage to property dismissed on the motion of Assistant District Attorney Anthony Saleme, court records said.
Naverre had been charged with assault by drive-by shooting and aggravated criminal damage to property by the district attorney in a bill of information.
Comeaux suspended the imposition of the sentence and placed Naverre on three years of probation.
In the same shooting, Lyndsey Morris, 24, of Morgan City, still faces the charge of assault by drive-by shooting and aggravated criminal damage to property. Her name is spelled Lindsey Morris in a bill of information but spelled Lyndsey Morris in her case file.
A third suspect, Devonte Breaux, 18, of Patterson, faces the charges of aggravated criminal damage to property, assault by drive-by shooting and carrying of a firearm or weapon in a firearm-free zone.
Shortly before 8 p.m. March 7, Morgan City police responded to a complaint of shots fired in the area of Orange Street in Morgan City, according to a news release. Officers arrived to learn that unknown subjects had fired a weapon into a residence and fled the scene.
Based on a vehicle description provided, Morgan City patrol officers apprehended three suspects in the area along with a .38-caliber handgun, police said.
The suspects, Breaux, Morris and Naverre, were detained and an investigation conducted. Based on evidence and statements recovered, investigators learned that the subjects had allegedly planned the attack, the release said. Police said detectives also learned the intended target’s identity. Police said no one, including children inside the home, was injured.
