River rises slightly, more floodgates closed

Morgan City and Berwick officials closed more floodgates due to a slight rise in the Atchafalaya River.
Morgan City officials planned to close the Belanger Street floodgate Friday. This is a precautionary action as the river gauge indicated an 8.15-foot reading with a slight increase for the next 24 hours, according to a city news release. Morgan City has now closed 11 of its 27 gates. No other closures are predicted at this time.
Due to the rising tide caused by high winds, Berwick officials had to close Gus Street and Mound Street gates Thursday night. Town officials are monitoring the last gate on Texas Street. Nine of the town's 10 gates are closed.
As of 10 a.m. today, the river was at 8.11 feet in Morgan City and projected to stay at 8.1 feet through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
