Sheriff: Ricohoc floodgates opened to control potential flooding issues

In an effort to control any potential flooding issues, the Ricohoc Floodgates have now opened. This allows the high water from Bayou Teche to exit and empty out into the Wax Lake Outlet, according to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office.
Opening the floodgates helps alleviate the high-water issues being experienced on the Teche. Sandbags are available at the St Mary Parish Hanson Barn located on La. 182, east of Franklin. Sandbags will be left outside after closing hours.
Because of the higher than average levels of Bayou Teche and the potential for property damage to occur from wakes caused by boats, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office is issuing a wake advisory for all areas of the Teche in St. Mary Parish. If you are boating in an area where the water is high you need to slow down. Be mindful of your wake and the potential damage you could cause. Members of the Marine Division are patrolling on the water. You will be cited if you are found to be operating a boat recklessly causing damage to property along the bayou.
