(Updated) Cleco: Squirrel causes 1,800 Berwick customers to lose power

Staff Report

Nearly 1,800 Cleco customers in Berwick lost power Saturday for several hours after a squirrel disrupted equipment at a power substation, according to a Cleco spokeswoman.
Just after 4 p.m. Saturday, a squirrel got into equipment at a Cleco power substation affecting all four circuits at the substation and causing customers in Berwick to lose power, Cleco Spokeswoman Robbyn Cooper said.
Cleco’s protective equipment activated at the substation after it detected the squirrel. The safety equipment stopped the flow of electricity to prevent further damage to the system, Cooper said. Workers restored power shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, she said.
