Coleman claims seat; bonds OK’d

Margaret C. “Faye” Coleman will become the newest town alderman after winning the seat in a runoff election Saturday.
The seat was left vacant by former alderman Tony Gibson who was removed due to an elections law violation. Coleman is Gibson’s sister.
Coleman narrowly defeated candidate Mike J. Caesar Sr. by nine votes. She received 268 votes to Caesar’s 259.
Also Saturday, a $3 million bond package proposed by St. Mary Parish Water and Sewer Commission passed with 157 votes to 48.
The district proposes using the bond proceeds for the “cost of constructing, equipping and acquiring extensions and improvements to the waterworks plant and system and sewer and sewerage treatment and disposal facilities of the commission.”
That extension includes areas along Chitimacha Trail and the Websterville area.
The commission has indicated that payments on the bonds will be covered by current millage revenues and will not result in an increase in customer rates.
