Fire damages Patterson house

A fire that started in the second story of a home Wednesday evening caused severe damage to the residence, and one firefighter sustained a minor shoulder injury while fighting the fire, Patterson Fire Chief Sherel Martin said.
The fire occurred at a residence in the 600 block of Victoria Riverside Road in Patterson at the home of Bobbie and Don Diaz. Their son was in the house when the fire started, Martin said. The residence is a two-story Victorian style home.
Residents said they heard popping sounds coming from upstairs, and Don Diaz investigated to find the upstairs fully engulfed in fire, Martin said.
Diaz went downstairs to get his wife and child out of the residence safely and then called the fire department which received the call at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday. Firefighters arrived on scene at 5:42 p.m. The first unit on the scene advised that heavy fire and smoke was coming from the second story, Martin said.
The upstairs was being used as an office, and the cause of the fire appears to have been electrical, the chief said. Due to the extreme damage in the office, determining the official cause of the fire will be difficult to determine, Martin said.
Firefighters did a “phenomenal job” to keep the fire from spreading to other parts of the house, the chief said. “Unfortunately, due to smoke and water coming through the floor, the bottom floor did sustain severe water damage,” Martin said.
One volunteer firefighter was transported to Teche Regional Medical Center to get a minor shoulder injury examined, the chief said.
Two pumper trucks, one service truck and 30 personnel responded to the fire. The scene was cleared at about 8:30 p.m.
