Police update charges on woman in Morgan City chase, wreck

Weslynn Martinez of Golden Meadow was jailed on a litany of charges including drunken driving after she led police on a chase from Lafourche Parish to Morgan City Friday, Troop C spokesman Evan Harrell said.
Martinez, 25, was charged at 1:19 p.m. with hit and run, aggravated flight, driving while intoxicated, careless operation and use and sale of drug paraphernalia.
The first crash happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. when Martinez was traveling on La. 308 near Gheens Road in Lafourche Parish. She rear-ended another vehicle and then fled the scene, Harrell said.
There were no injuries in the crash and the other driver contacted 911. State police later located the Chevrolet Silverado on La. 182 in Terrebonne Parish with the help of a person struck in the earlier accident, police said at the time of the crash.
Harrell said state troopers attempted a traffic stop, but the truck continued west on La. 182 through Terrebonne and Assumption parishes, reaching speeds of 100 mph.
When the truck crossed the Amelia bridge into St. Mary Parish, it was successfully spiked and the tires were deflated. However, the vehicle continued west on La. 182 toward Morgan City. As the vehicle traveled into Morgan City, units from Morgan City and Berwick police departments and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office joined in the pursuit.
Martinez’ truck, upon reaching the intersection of Brasher Avenue and 7th Street, ran a red signal light and struck two vehicles shortly before 1:30 pm.
Morgan City Police Capt. James Blair said Martinez was transported to Teche Regional Medical Center for treatment. She was released and booked into the Morgan City Jail as a fugitive and released to the Louisiana State Police to be transported back to Lafourche Parish, Blair said.
Police said the drivers of the other three cars in the crashes were not injured.
