Police looking for foot chase suspect

Staff Report

Police are looking for a suspect who fled on foot from officers Thursday after a traffic stop causing authorities to put J.B. Maitland Elementary on lockdown during the morning, according to a Morgan City Police news release.
At 11:12 a.m. Thursday, officers became involved in a foot chase of a suspect who led officers into the area near J.B. Maitland Elementary School. The chase began after a traffic stop when a suspect fled on foot from officers, and narcotics were located in the suspect’s vehicle, Morgan City Police Spokesman Capt. James Blair said.
As a precaution, J.B. Maitland Elementary School was temporarily placed on a lock down as officers searched the area for the suspect. Officers remained in the area until the area was declared safe and the lockdown lifted. Officers conducted a safety check of the school and the faculty was updated. The lockdown lasted about 20 to 30 minutes, the news release stated.
The suspect was not apprehended, and officers are still investigating the incident and attempting to locate the suspect, the release stated. A description of the suspect has not yet been released.
The Morgan City Police Department placed additional patrols in the school zone areas Thursday to ensure a problem-free first day of school and is committed to ensuring the safety of the children, according to the release.
