Bayou Vista school cafeteria damaged in break-in
About $600 of food was destroyed when Bayou Vista Elementary was broken into Tuesday afternoon.
Principal Claire Guarisco said the break-in was caught on video. “Students of a St. Mary Parish school are responsible, and they are being processed through disciplinary procedures through the school system,” she said.
The break-in occurred after everyone left campus Tuesday and damage was mainly in the cafeteria, Guarisco said.
“It was mainly food thrown around and some food spoiled because a cooler door was left open,” she said.
She declined to say how the juveniles accessed the building.
The damage was discovered when the cafeteria workers arrived for their shift this morning. Guarisco said the employees exited the building, called the St. Mary Sheriff’s Office, and then called her.
Traci Landry, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, said, “We received a call at 5:32 a.m. this morning that the Bayou Vista Elementary School cafeteria had been broken into.”
No major damage to the facility was reported, and the case remains under investigation.
“At this point in the investigation, deputies do not believe this crime is related to the recent residential burglaries,” Landry said.
Guarisco said the damage did not impact the school day.
“We served breakfast and we have lunch ready to go. The school day was not disrupted whatsoever,” Guarisco said.
