Castille wins 100 Black Men 5K

An American standout master’s runner won the Marcus Jones/100 Black Men of St. Mary Parish 17th annual 5K Run/Walk, held Aug. 30.
Kevin Castille, 41, of Lafayette, who during his running career has set American masters records in the 3,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 10-mile run, won the event in 15 minutes, 43 seconds.
He is the head coach at St. Thomas More’s cross country team.
Ellen Mendoza, 32, originally from Patterson and a resident of Lafayette, was the first female runner to cross the finish line when she clocked in at 19:59.
Both are previous winners of the 100 Black Men of St. Mary race and received a $250 prize for winning the race.
Sal Grizzaffi, 17, of Morgan City, placed second overall and among male runners at 18:28, while Kelnisha Castille 17, of Lafayette, who is Kevin Castille’s daughter, was second overall among females at 21:09.
Third overall and among males was Jason Cheek, 33, of Baton Rouge, originally from Berwick, who clocked in at 19:53, while Kirby Roy, 18, of Morgan City was third among females at 21:26.
In the walkers’ category, Amy Medaria, 43, placed first at 47:46, while Connie Delaune, 47, was second at 47:47 and Lashonda Knight, 37, was third at 47:48.
Mike Francis, 48, the lone male walker, finished in 54:01.
