Newman, Westlake win championships at Morgan City tourney

Isidore Newman and Westlake were crowned Green and White Division tournament champions, respectively, Saturday at Morgan City High School’s 2014 Lady Tiger Classic.
Newman defeated Hahnville 2-0 (25-18, 25-14) in the Green championship, while Westlake topped Central Lafourche 2-1 (22-25, 25-7, 15-11) in the White title match.
Newman finished the tournament with a 6-0 mark, while Westlake was 5-0.
Hahnville was 5-1 and Central Lafourche, 4-1.
Hahnville, who won Pool B of the Green Division, advanced to the finals with a 2-1 (25-19, 23-25, 15-8) win against Berwick.
Newman, winner of the Green Division’s Pool A, defeated Pool B runner-up Sam Houston 2-0 (25-18, 25-21) in the other semifinal.
In the White Division, Westlake, winner of Pool B, defeated Patterson, Pool A runner-up, 2-0 (25-9, 25-8) to advance to the finals.
In the other semifinal, Central Lafourche, winner of Pool A, defeated Pool B runner-up Houma Christian 2-1 (25-21, 21-25, 15-13).
Among area teams, Patterson finished 3-2, Berwick 2-3, and Morgan City 1-3.
Patterson, who had won its opener against Covenant Christian Thursday, dropped its first contest Saturday to Central Lafourche, 2-0 (12-25, 17-25) before responding with 2-0 wins against Ellender (25-17, 25-21) and Franklin (25-9, 25-9).
The Lumberjills fell in the semifinals to Westlake 2-0 (25-9, 25-8).
Against Central Lafourche, junior Arian Grogan led the Lumberjills with three points, four kills, two digs and two blocks.
Other top contributors included sophomore Makayla Ruiz, two kills and two digs; junior Nia Broussard, two digs and five assists; senior Nyria Robinson, one ace, one point, one kill and two digs; junior Tamia Washington, one ace, one point, one kill and one dig; and senior Jazmin Evans, one ace and three points.
In the win against Ellender, the Lumberjills recorded 14 aces, led by seven from Grogan. Grogan also had one point and four kills.
Other top contributors included Evans, four aces, six points and four digs; junior Gaylen Grogan, three kills, one block and one assist; Washington, two aces, six points, one kill and one dig; Broussard, two kills, one dig and six assists; and Ruiz, five points, one kill and three digs.
In the win against Franklin, Patterson recorded 16 aces, topping its earlier output against Ellender.
Evans led the Lumberjills in serving with five aces as well as four points and two digs.
Other top contributors included Arian Grogan, three aces, three points and four kills; Washington, four aces and four points; Broussard, two points, one kill, two digs and four assists; senior Jasmine Roberson, two aces, three points; Robinson, two aces and one kill; and Gaylen Grogan, one kill, two blocks and one assist.
Against Westlake, Ruiz led the Lumberjills with two kills and five digs, while Broussard had two digs and five assists; and Evans, six digs.
Patterson (7-2) will return to action today when it hosts Franklin.
Berwick, who had dropped its tournament opener to Newman Thursday, responded with 2-0 wins against Landry-Walker (25-16, 25-11) and St. Martinville (25-23-, 27-25).
The Lady Panthers fell to Sulphur 2-1 (25-23, 17-25, 9-15) and then 2-1 in the semifinals to Hahnville (19-25, 25-23, 8-15).
Against Landry-Walker, the Lady Panthers had 12 aces, led by four from sophomore Roslyn Gros. Gros also recorded five digs.
Other top contributors for Berwick were junior Ashton Morales, three aces, three kills, seven assists and two digs; senior Abigail Askew, six kills, one block and one dig; senior Hannah Carpenter, two aces, one kill and five digs; and sophomore Mary Jordan Melancon, five assists and one dig.
In the win against St. Martinville, Morales had three aces, four kills, six assists and four digs.
Other top contributors included Melancon, two aces, two kills, one block, six assists and one dig; Askew, five kills and one block; Carpenter, nine digs; and Gros, 12 digs.
In the loss to Sulphur, Berwick recorded 63 digs on defense, led by 21 from Carpenter and 16 from senior Rennen DeLatte.
Carpenter also had two assists, while DeLatte added an ace.
Other contributors for Berwick included Morales, four aces, one kill, three assists and 11 digs; Askew, six kills, one block and one dig; and Melancon, two kills, two assists and seven digs.
In the loss to Hahnville, Berwick had 66 digs, led by 22 from Carpenter and 11 from DeLatte.
Other top contributors included Askew, nine kills and one dig; Morales, one ace, two kills, one block, three assists and nine digs; Melancon, two kills, eight assists and nine digs; sophomore Jordan Lipari, one kill, three assists and five digs; and Gros, two aces and eight digs.
Berwick (9-5) will return to action today when it hosts Assumption. Varsity is set for 4 p.m. with junior varsity and freshmen play to follow at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
Morgan City, who opened its tournament play Thursday with a loss to South Terrebonne, fell to Hahnville 2-0 (11-25, 15-25), Sam Houston 2-1 (26-24, 23-25, 8-15), and defeated New Iberia 2-0 (25-13, 25-23).
Against Hahnville, senior Jaiveianna Jones led the Lady Tigers with one ace, five kills, four blocks and five digs.
Other top contributors included junior Karley Guidry, one kill, four assists and three digs; senior Brandi Ingram, seven digs; and freshman Kennedy Hebert, five digs.
Against Sam Houston, Morgan City recorded 10 aces, led by six from junior Cecily Feliciano. Feliciano also had nine assists and five digs.
Other top contributors for Morgan City included Jones, three aces, eight kills, three blocks and five digs; Hebert, one ace, two kills and nine digs; and Ingram, two kills and seven digs.
In Morgan City’s win against New Iberia, Jones had one ace, 12 kills, one block, one assist and seven digs.
Other top contributors for Morgan City included Ingram, two aces, two kills and nine digs; Feliciano, one ace, eight assists, and three digs; Hebert, one ace and eight digs; and junior Alex Thompson, two aces, two kills and two digs.
Morgan City will return to action today when it travels to face South Terrebonne. Junior varsity action will begin at 4 p.m. with varsity to follow.
