’Jills knock off Abbeville in OT

The Patterson Lumberjills used a big fourth quarter to force overtime against Abbeville before knocking them off in the extra period for a 62-55 win in both team’s season opener Thursday.
Trailing 37-22 entering the fourth quarter, Patterson outscored Abbeville 23-8 in the frame to knot the score at 45 at the end of regulation.
In the overtime period, Patterson outscored Abbeville 17-10 to win its season opener.
Abbeville took a 7-2 lead after the first period and led 27-14 at the half.
Both teams combined for 90 free throw attempts in the contest. Patterson was 26 of 56, while Abbeville was 19 of 34.
Gaylen Grogan led three Patterson players in double figures as she scored 17 points and also had four rebounds and three blocks.
Others reaching double figures were Alex Benjamin, 13 points, one rebound and one assist; and Erykah Singleton, 11 points and one rebound.
Other scorers for Patterson were: Nakia Brooks, six points and five rebounds; Jazmin Evans, five points and one assist; Makayla Ruiz, four points; Nyla Holder, three points and one rebound; Nia Broussard, two points; and Kemprielle Williams, one point.
Patterson will return to action Monday when it begins participation in Catholic High-New Iberia’s tournament.
Central Catholic
edges Westgate
Central Catholic edged Westgate 21-18 in girls’ basketball action Thursday in Morgan City.
Hallie Autin led Central Catholic with 10 points, while Mary-Beth Blanchard had six points.
Other top contributors included Rebecca David, three points and two rebounds; and Taylor Picou, two points.
Central Catholic won’t resume action again until Dec. 2 when it travels to face West Jefferson in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
Chappelle edges
Morgan City
Archbishop Chappelle edged Morgan City High School 39-36 at South Lafourche’s tournament Thursday.
Laqwaisha Bourgeois led the Lady Tigers with 21 points.
Other scorers included Meya Morse and Alisha Singleton, four points each; Elicia Dorsey, Hailey Lewis and Steveyion Walker, all with two points; and Samyra Toups with one.
Morgan City High School will return to action today when it faces South Lafourche in a 6:30 p.m. contest.
