Bayou Vista Garden Club holds March meeting

“For the Love of Iris?” was the theme for the Bayou Vista Garden Club’s March program.
Rusty McSparrin, Louisiana iris grower, hybridizer and owner of Bois d’Arc Gardens, a state licensed nursery in Schriever, gave a PowerPoint presentation on Louisiana irises. The focus was on the history, conservation and cultivation of native Louisiana irises, which, according to McSparrin, are an endangered species as a result of many factors. Also contributing to the program was Bud McSparrin.
Environmental Awareness Chairman Kim Alcina displayed birdfeeders she created by upcycling the globes of old light fixtures. A member plant exchange was conducted by Horticulture Chairman Jean Chauvin.
Hostesses for the meeting were Jeannie Lawrence, Verdie Laws and Dawn Thomason. The mass floral design, “Irish Eyes Are Smiling,” was created by Thomason. The design was arranged in Thomason’s home-grown cabbage and placed in a crystal bowl. It included home-grown carrots (compliments of club member Donna Richard), potatoes, green onions, fern, elephant bush, sweet olive tree branches and daisies.
Door prize winner was Carol Smith.
The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. April 13 at the Bayou Vista Community Center. New members are welcome to attend.
