Franklin Golden Age Club meeting
The monthly meeting of the Franklin Golden Age Club was held April 21 at the Franklin Recreation Center with 33 members in attendance. Club President Pat Blanco opened the meeting and also read the opening prayer; John Benge led the Pledge of Allegiance. Print-outs of the March treasury report and minutes from the March meeting were made available to members.
Members enjoyed listening to the talents of Dale Clements as he gave a recitation of poems he has written over the years. Dale is the brother of club members, Ida Simoneaux and Lennis Clements. Following his presentation, President Pat Blanco presented him a gift from the club.
Dues for 2015 are being collected from club members. The club is welcoming new members 50 years of age and over.
Discussion was held on the club’s upcoming trip to Breaux Bridge offered jointly with the Council on Aging. Jeanette Clements has called all members to find out which members will be participating.
The Executive Committee has met twice since the March meeting to review and update the club’s bylaws. Each member or couple was given a copy of the revised bylaws to take home and review. Everyone should bring their copy to the May meeting as we review it. Discussion will be held and any suggestions for changes to the bylaws should be expressed at the meeting. After corrections are made, a new draft will be presented at the next meeting. If no corrections are made, voting will be held for adoption of the bylaws with a 1/2 majority needed for approval. All members are urged to attend.
The Golden Age Club Annual Crawfish Boil will be held at the Franklin Senior Center at noon Sun., May 17.
The deadline for applications to the Golden Age Scholarship for higher education was April 1 with the club receiving only one application. The Executive Committee voted on this applicant to receive the scholarship which will be announced at the May meeting.
All members were given tickets to sell for the upcoming Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser to be held Sun., June 14. Money for the tickets may be turned in at the May meeting. Those sold after that date should be turned in to Verline Keenze at Verline’s Cake Shop with all money turned in by June 5. A lot of help will be needed and all members are urged to participate.
Club members welcomed Ruby Haydel as a returning member. Dale Clements was a guest at the meeting.
Celebrating birthdays in April are Calvin Gros, Denise Romero, Carrie Stewart, Hope Uze and Claire Wiese.
The next monthly meeting will be held Tue., May 19 and will include crawfish étouffée.
