Rock the Fifth on Sunday

Steve Morell was ready to heap praise on Morgan City government workers as he looked over Lawrence Park.
“The city has done a great job,” said Morell, manager of the Main Street program. “It’s beautiful out here. We expect a great crowd.”
The preparations are for Rock the Fifth, Sunday’s local celebration of July Fourth, plus one. The Sunday event allows local people to sample some other Independence Day activities around the area, then come home to some music, refreshments and fireworks Sunday night.
Morgan City has expanded its musical offerings, and Berwick is stepping up to be a bigger part of Rock the Fifth. The two communities are co-sponsoring the 9 p.m. fireworks over the Atchafalaya River for the second straight year. Berwick now offers music, food and drink, too.
At Lawrence Park in Morgan City, Sunday’s schedule will be:
—1-2:30 p.m., music by Driftwood, which plays classic rock, pop, country and swamp pop.
1-45 p.m., Kids Corner activities presented by Pharr Chapel Methodist Church.
—3-5 p.m., the Beau Young Band, which plays music that includes rock ’n roll, country and zydeco.
—5:30-8:30 p.m., Krossfyre, with music from fifties to Motown.
Central Catholic High School will have a hamburger booth, and Tellman barbecue dinners will be available. Soft drinks, water, beer and wine will be sold there, too.
Morell said the booths and stage will be covered this year in case of rain. He thanked Beth Portero of the Main Street Program for design work related to the event, and thanked Sewart Supply and Dr. F. Scott Sicard for sponsoring the stage.
In Berwick, meanwhile, the festivities get underway at 5 p.m. on the riverfront.
The band Gone Pecan will play until the fireworks start.
The Berwick Volunteer Fire Department will sell hamburgers, cold drinks and beer, while The Big Chill will have hot dogs, nachos and snow cones.
The finale for both celebrations will be the fireworks over the river at 9 p.m.
