Morgan City native named fire chief in Oklahoma
Bert Norton, a 1989 Morgan City High School graduate, recently became fire chief of Midwest City, Oklahoma.
He is the son of Delores and Noel Norton, according to a news release.
Norton, a major in the Midwest City Fire Department, became the city’s new fire chief June 4.
Midwest City is a suburb of Oklahoma City with a population of approximately 56,000 with six fire stations and 80 fire personnel.
Norton worked alongside former Midwest City Fire Chief Jarett Metheny until Metheny’s retirement July 6 after 20 years with Midwest City.
Norton was sworn in as a Midwest City firefighter in June 2001.
Norton began his fire service career with Harrah Fire Department in 1994, the release stated.
Since his time with the Midwest City Fire Department, Norton has served in every rank up to ride-out major.
He has spent years working towards being a chief officer through earning a bachelor of technology degree in emergency responder administration from Oklahoma State University-Oklahoma City.
He is credentialed as a fire officer by the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
Norton has successfully completed the Blue Card Command training system.
He has been an active member of numerous state and national professional associations serving multiple committees and boards throughout his fire career.
Norton, his wife Melody, and their three children are excited about the new opportunity.
