Tough Tuesday on local roadways; injuries, damage reported

Authorities in the Tri-City area responded to several wrecks Tuesday including one where a car overturned on U.S. 90 in Bayou Vista and another in Berwick where a vehicle struck a railroad crossing signal requiring a passenger to be taken to the hospital via AirMed.
State Police Troop I responded to a two-vehicle crash at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. 90 west in Bayou Vista.
The crash involved a Toyota Tundra driven by James Roberts, 84, of Morgan City, who was cited for failure to yield with an accident. Roberts wasn’t injured in the crash, Troop I Sgt. Tregg Theriot said.
The other driver of a Pontiac Sunfire, Tyren Brooks, 31, of Patterson, was transported to Teche Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, Theriot said. Teche Regional Spokeswoman Sabrina Roy said Brooks was still in the hospital with minor injuries as of this morning.
Berwick Police responded to a single-vehicle crash at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday at a railroad crossing on Berwick South Road. Acadian Ambulance and the Berwick Volunteer Fire Department arrived on scene, police said.
A vehicle is believed to have struck a railroad crossing signal on the front passenger side of the vehicle, and then ran off the road onto the shoulder of Berwick South Road, police said.
The passenger side of the vehicle was heavily damaged, and the passenger, Adriana Griffin, 56, of Lafayette, had to be extricated from the vehicle, police said. She had a couple broken bones and was transported by AirMed to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, police said.
The driver of the vehicle, Carl Griffin, 48, of Lafayette, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated first offense, careless operation with a crash and no proof of insurance.
arl Griffin failed a field sobriety test and registered 0.164 grams-percent blood alcohol content on a chemical test for intoxication, police said. He remained incarcerated this morning.
Berwick Police contacted BNSF because of the damage to railroad arms.
As of this morning, Berwick South Road was shut down while the railroad arms were repaired. Police expected BNSF to finish those repairs today.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office also responded to a two-vehicle wreck at 10:53 a.m. Tuesday in the Walmart parking lot where a vehicle rear-ended another vehicle, Sheriff’s Office Spokeswoman Traci Landry said. No one was cited and no injuries were reported in that wreck, Landry said.
