The heat is on in St. Mary; advisory in effect

NEW ORLEANS –– An excessive heat warning remains in effect for southeast Louisiana and southern Mississippi.
According to the National Weather Service, the warning was issued Saturday afternoon and is set to expire at 7 p.m. today.
Experts say the warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur.
Forecasters say high temperatures will be in the mid- and upper 90s across the area. Heat index values are expected to be 112 to 115 today.
The NWS said relief from the extreme heat is not expected until Tuesday or Wednesday.
In St. Mary Parish, the high is expected to reach 97 degrees today with a heat index -- a measure of the combined effects of hat and humidity –– of 110 degrees.
The NWS urges people to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, to schedule outdoor activities early in the morning or in the evening, and to drink plenty of water during outdoor exertion.
It’s a good idea to check on elderly friend sand relatives to make sure they’re all right.
