Tigers lose to Green Devils in 61-56 contest

Plaquemine stormed back from 13 points down in the fourth quarter to upend Morgan City 61-56 at Morgan City High School Tuesday night.
Morgan City (5-3) led 45-38 at the end of the third quarter and scored the first four baskets of the fourth quarter before Plaquemine scored its first basket with just 5:30 left in the game. The Green Devils, however, were in the bonus early and used the free-throw line to get back into the game. Plaquemine (5-3) were 10-for-10 on the free-throw line down the stretch and 13-for-15 for the game to pull to 53-50 with 2:32 left to play.
“They did a really good job of pressuring the basketball and we didn’t handle it very well. We had too many costly turnovers,” Morgan City Coach Robert Lee said. “They also did a good job of attacking the basketball and they stepped up and made their free throws and we didn’t. Give them all the credit; they played better than we did late in the game.”
The Devils scored on their next three possessions to take their first lead 58-56 with 39 seconds left to play. Morgan City’s Ke’sean Francois hit a couple baskets to keep the Tigers close but Plaquemine made its free throws to seal the game.
Morgan City led 16-14 after the first quarter on a Francois three-pointer at the buzzer and extended the lead to 27-19 at halftime. Cedric Gant led Morgan City with 12 points, Makye Richard added 11 points, Ke’sean Francois and Lloyd Singleton had 10 points each, Tywan Walker had eight points, and Taaj Daniels had five points.
The Tigers return to action Thursday in the East Ascension Tournament in Gonzales.
Patterson 55,
Breaux Bridge 49
Patterson (2-2) jumped out to an early lead and held on to beat Breaux Bridge on the road Tuesday night.
Taylan Grogan led the Lumberjacks with 15 points, Nehemiah Augustus added 10, Kenneth Washington had seven, D.J. Jones, Jordan Butler and Dajon Richard each provided six, and Tyric Garrett had five.
The Lumberjacks returns to the floor during the Patterson tournament slated Dec. 17-19.
Berwick 55, St. John of Plaquemine 27
Audwin Williams led the way with 19 points, three rebounds and an assist for home team Berwick (7-2) during Tuesday night action. Travis Whitehead added six points, five rebounds and four blocks, while Silton Span had six points and two rebounds for the Panthers.
Larenz Clark chipped in five points, three rounds and three steals; Kenan Jones had four points, three rebounds and two steals; Tysin Meads had four points and 10 rebounds; Cody Roberie added three points and five rebound;, and Donald Tillman had two points, five rebounds and six assists. Also adding to the numbers were Josh Carver with two points and two rebounds, Grant Oubre had two points and five rebounds, and Tavaris Howard had two points.
Berwick returns to action Thursday at Ascension Episcopal.
Northside 68,
Morgan City 36
Laqwajhia Bourgeois led the Lady Tigers (4-2) with 20 points but it wasn’t enough on the road Tuesday night in Lafayette.
Alisha Singleton added 10 points for the Lady Tigers, while Elicia Dorsey, Nia Lightfoot and Sh’Diamond Holly had two points each.
MCHS returns to action Thursday against Ellender and Friday at John Curtis in the Hahnville Tournament.
Central Catholic 34,
Vandebilt Catholic 19
Central Catholic High School Lady Eagles (5-1) upended the Lady Terriers in Morgan City.
Central Catholic was led by Lydia Rivas’ 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and five steals. Hallie Autin chipped in 10 points, two rebounds, three assists and six steals, while Alayaih Poole had five points, two rebounds and four steals.
The Lady Eagles return to the floor Thursday in the Vandebilt Tournament against H.L. Bourgeois at 4:45 p.m. and Friday against Terrebonne at 4:45 p.m. CCHS will finish the tourney against St. Katherine Drexel Saturday at 4 p.m.
Central Lafourche 42,
Patterson 24
Central Lafourche stifled Patterson at home Tuesday night.
Leading scorers for the Lumberjills were Alex Benjamin with 13 points, Makayla Ruiz had four points, Kempreille Williams added three points, and Erykah Singleton and Nula Holder had two points each.
The Jills next court action is Monday at West St. Mary. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
