Injured eagle dies

Staff Report

The American bald eagle injured Dec. 28, 2015, in Morgan City has died.
Dr. Javier Nevarez told Cajun Coast Executive Director Carrie Stansbury this morning that the death was likely due to the eagle becoming septic from the trauma suffered, according to a Cajun Coast news release.
Morgan City police rescued the eagle last week after another eagle attacked it.
Dr. Nevarez said the eagle had two surgeries on its injured leg last week, became depressed over the weekend and died overnight, the release said. The doctor said he is contacting U.S. Fish and Wildlife to see if they will allow a necropsy, the release stated.
Cajun Coast will continue to collect donations at its Morgan City office and at the Morgan City Petting Zoo for the LSU Wildlife Hospital to help with the cost of its care and other wildlife in similar situations. All donations will be forwarded to the hospital during the 11th annual Eagle Expo & More Feb. 26-27.
