McGuire set to join Ragin' Cajuns basketball team

Staff Report

Head men’s basketball coach Bob Marlin and head football coach Mark Hudspeth announced Monday that Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns football standout Elijah McGuire has joined the men’s basketball team, effective immediately.
McGuire, the 2014 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, was scheduled to work out for the first time with the Ragin’ Cajuns Monday.
The Houma native was a two-sport athlete at Vandebilt Catholic High School where he was the Terriers’ starting quarterback and an all-district guard on the basketball team.
“We’re excited to have Eli join our basketball team,” Marlin said in a news release. “He has a tremendous passion for both sports, and this (playing basketball) has been something that he has wanted to do since he first enrolled at UL (in 2013). This is his first opportunity to join our program, and we’re anxious to see what he can do.”
The 5-foot, 11-inch product led Louisiana on the gridiron in 2015 with 1,058 yards and 13 touchdowns while catching 33 passes and three touchdowns.
“Eli loves to compete, loves this university and feels like he can be an asset to the men’s basketball program,” Hudspeth said in a news release. “If this will help our men’s basketball program with their continued success as they compete for a Sun Belt Conference title, then Eli and our basketball program has our full support.”
Louisiana (7-8, 3-3 SBC) will host South Alabama Thursday in a Sun Belt Conference game at the Cajundome. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. It is the nightcap of a doubleheader featuring the Ragin’ Cajuns women’s team facing the Jaguars at 5 p.m.
