Hanson Memorial’s Guienze fires complete game no-hitter
Pitcher John Guienze fired a complete game no-hitter, lifting the Hanson Memorial Tigers to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Rayne Wolves in the Thursday’s nightcap in the annual Hanson Memorial Classic Baseball Tourney at the Amar Lancon Field.
Guienze turned in a pitching gem, dominating the Rayne batters over seven complete innings, surrendering no runs and no hits while fanning 10 and walking three. Guienze faced 26 batters over seven complete innings, throwing 71 strikes and 39 balls on his way to the complete game victory.
Guienze outdueled Rayne starting pitcher Hunter Meche, who worked six innings, allowing four runs on five hits with one walk and nine strikeouts.
Guienze helped his own cause with a late-game triple, leading the Tigers at the plate.
Leading hitters for the Tigers were: Brennan Young, 1 for 3; Luke Lancon, 2 for 3; Bo Barrilleaux, 1 for 3, triple, run; Guienze, 1 for 3, run, RBI; Clint Young, run and Noah Judice, run.
Clint Young produced the Tigers’ first run after getting hit by a pitch before swiping second base and advancing to third on an errant throw before tagging home plate on a passed ball to lift the Tigers to a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
In the sixth frame, Guienze ripped a three-run triple, sending the Tigers outfront by a 4-0 advantage.
With the win, the Tigers improved to 5-1 on the season.
HANSON 6, HOUMA CHRISTIAN 5
John Guienze belted a grand slam, powering the Hanson Memorial Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the Houma Christian Warriors in Thursday’s opening game of the Hanson Memorial Baseball Classic.
Guienze, who went 2 for 3 in the first game, ripped the bases-clearing grand slam while collecting five RBIs and one run.
Leading hitters for Hanson Memorial were: Chase Mensman, 1 for 2, triple, RBI, 2 runs; John Guienze, 2 for 3, grand slam, triple, 5 RBI, run; Brennan Young, run; Bo Barrilleaux, 1 for 2, run and Payton Trahan, run.
Hanson’s Josh Sanchez picked up the mound victory in relief of starter Spencer Bishop. Sanchez worked two innings, giving up one run on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. Bishop started on the hill for the Tigers, tossing three complete frames, giving up one run on four hits with one strikeout and one walk. Jack Vaccarella hurled two complete innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.
HANSON 8, ST. EDMUND 7
LAFAYETTE _ Brennan Young ripped a game-winning RBI triple to score Evan Thibodaux as the Hanson Memorial Tigers topped the St. Edmund Blue Jays here Monday at a game played at Louisiana-Lafayette.
Young was also the winning pitcher after hurling 1 and two-thirds frames in relief. Young allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts.
Josh Sanchez started for the Tigers, going 3 1/3 innings before giving way to Evan Thibodaux, who worked two complete innings.
Young collected a pair of hits and two runs while John Guienze ripped a triple with Chase Mensman and Evan Thibodaux also hitting safely in the contest.
