Hanson Lady Tigers top Gueydan Honey Bears
Paige Diamond was one single shy of a hitting for the cycle while Sarah Sonnier clubbed a homer in her only plate appearance as the Hanson Memorial Lady Tigers toppled the Gueydan Lady Bears 10-0 in five innings Tuesday at the HM Girls Softball Complex.
Diamond went on a 3 for 3 tear, smashing a homer, triple and double over five innings. Sonnier cracked a homer in her only plate appearance. Sonnier was also dominate in the circle, starting for the Lady Tigers and working 2.1 frames, not allowing a run nor a hit with four strikeouts and two walks.
Hanson strung together its third straight league victory in impressive fashion with a combined one-hit shutout victory behind pitchers Ashley Meyerholtz and Sarah Sonnier.
Meyerholt picked up victory after appearing in relief of Sonnier. She tossed 2.1 frames, yielding no runs on one hit with two strikeouts and no walks.
Sonnier started in the circle and hurled 1.2 scoreless innings without a hit while fanning four and walking two.
Leading hitters for the Hanson Memorial Lady Tigers were: Paige Diamond, 3 for 3, homer, triple, double, 3 RBI; Sarah Sonnier, 1 for 1, homer, 2 RBI; Lunden Verdin, 2 for 2, double, single, 2 RBI; Baylee Young, 2 for 3, RBI; Casey Fitgerald, 2 for 3, 2 singles.
Hanson jumped to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning behind a two-out rally. Kaylee Broussard and Alyssa Young reached prior to Paige Diamond ripping a triple, delivering Broussard and Young for a 2-0 advantage. Baylee Young singled home Diamond, giving the Lady Tigers a 3-0 advantage. A short time later, Sarah Sonnier belted a two-run homer to hand Hanson a 5-0 cushion.
In the bottom of the second inning, Hanson stretched its lead to 7-0 when Allyssa Young and Paige Diamond tagged home plate. Diamond clubbed her second extra base hit on a double following up her triple in the first frame.
In the fourth inning, Diamond circled the bases behind Kaylee Broussard on a two-run homer to lift the Hanson Memorial Lady Tigers to a 9-0 advantage.
Hanson’s Casey Fitzgerald score on a wild pitch from third base to give the Lady Tigers a five-inning, 10-0 District 7-1A victory over the Gueydan Honey Bears.
Hanson Memorial (10-1, 3-0) will travel to play the STM Lady Cougars today at 4 p.m. in Lafayette. Hanson will also return to league play on Thursday on the road against Central Catholic in Bayou Vista at 5 p.m.
