Police: Crash leaves cyclist in serious condition
A Berwick man is in serious condition at a Baton Rouge hospital after an SUV struck his bicycle Thursday evening on La. 70 in Morgan City, police said.
Morgan City police received a report at 5:59 p.m. Thursday of a crash involving a cyclist on La. 70 near Lake End Park between the judges’ stand and Carillon Tower.
The preliminary investigation shows that, for unknown reasons, a Chevy Tahoe SUV driven by Jason Smith of Stephensville veered onto the shoulder of the roadway and struck a cyclist, Clay Leonard of Berwick.
Leonard was airlifted to a Baton Rouge hospital where he is listed in serious condition, police said. Both the Tahoe and bicycle were traveling south on La. 70.
Police say the investigation into the crash is ongoing, and toxicology test results are pending.
